Allergies are not caused by bedding
material. The reason for allergic reactions are dust mites
or, to be more precise, the waste products of mites. A good
down comforter covers its downs in a down proof shell, that
is: A fabric that does not let downs out...and if the cover
keeps the downs in, it is dense enought to keep mites out.
It's that simple!
Synthetic Bedding vs. Natural Bedding
Some careful shoppers attempt to control
allergy problems by purchasing comforters with synthetic
fill. Ironically synthetic fill is rarely put into down
proof shells but into fabric with lower thread counts. With
few exceptions, there will be no protection from mite and
allergies in comforters with synthetic fill.
As early as 1976
a scientific report found proof that the main allergen of
dust mites appears up to eight times as often in polyester-filled
pillows than in feather pillows. For the detailed reports,

What do we learn: If a fill of pure
and sterile downs and feathers is covered in a down proof
cotton shell there is no reason to worry about allergies.
