The fabric for our comforters and pillows
is exclusively produced by German weavers.
European weavers are know to be among the best in the textile
industry. German weavers in particular are recognized worldwide
for their quality and expertise.
When shopping for material that is close
to your skin it is important not to confuse European quality
bedding with cheap imports. The producers of our
fabric are well known
German weavers that do not shop their twill through middlemen
from unknown sources. To ascertain the quality of their
products our weavers regularly test their fabrics with renowned
laboratories and institutes that uphold stiff standards
with respect to skin friendliness, ecological balance, and
more. Our weavers maintain an active account with the Hohenstein
Institute that tries to convey "Confidence in Textiles"
by maintaining the "Oeko-Tex Standard 100." The
quality of our fabrics is of utmost importance to us.
All fabrics are made of 100% long staple
Egyptian cotton, sometimes referred to as Maco, or Maco
Bay cotton. The thread counts in most fabrics are so high
that we call them down proof. For pillows we use ticking
with a yarn count of 40 to 70Nm. The fabric for comforters
befits the high quality of its content. Typically you will
find yarns ranging from 100Nm to 150Nm. The higher numbers
indicate higher thread counts.
Down proof fabric is available in different
qualities ranging from 176 bis 240 threads per square inch
(tpi). Our fabrics start at246 tpi. Down proof satin ranges
in thread counts from 300 to 400 tpi. Our satin typically
has 353 tpi.
High thread counts asure a long life
span for pillows and comforters. Moreover, fabric is made
downproof through the use of a chemical process. The fabric
as such is, however, the basis for its downproofness.
Typically the bedding industry uses
two different kinds of cotton. Pillow shells are usually
produced using "Upland" cotton. Comforters, on
the other hand, require a qualitatively superior cotton.
The firmer kind of cotton is known by different names: long
staple, Egyptian, Sealand, Maco and Maco Bay. You will find
producers who use a mix of both cottons for comforters.
The longer fibers of Egyptian cotton add much needed firmness
to the fabric, without necessarily making it more heavy.
For Dr. Bed products we guarantee the exclusive use of 100%
pure Egyptian cotton.
"Are your comforters dust mite
proof," some customers asked us.
In general down comforters are NOT the preferred habitat
of mites. Nevertheless in our
production we have made sure that all our comforters are
dust mite proof. According to Prof. Dr. Jürgens, comforters
produced for Dr. Bed are absolutely dust mite proof because
they use high thread count shells and ticking. In other
words, our comforters can be used by people with allergies
meaning that also our other health conscious customers can
rest asured. We have done our best to asure your comfort
and health.
